When Solomon became King of Israel, he had serious concerns about his ability to govern God’s people under his watch. He knew that discernment was going to be key, and he doubted that he had enough. So when God told Solomon that he we would give him anything he asked for, Solomon asked for discernment.
“I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties. Your servant is here among the people you have chosen, a great people, too numerous to count or number. So give your servant a discerningheart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong” (1 Kings 3:7-9).
Ever heard a joke about how difficult it is for men to understand women. There aren’t many jokes about the reverse of that, but there are plenty of women who can’t figure out men either. Truth be told, we don’t think most men and women feel the need to understand the opposite sex as much as they desire to understand the particular member of the opposite sex that they chose!
With intensity and persistence, pray for discernment. Pray together when you are in the midst of disagreement. Pray together and individually when you are are not. Prayer is not the only part of the solution to discernment deficiency, but it is the first step and the most important.
