Have you ever found out about a work-place affair and thought, “I would never have imagined them together”?
Affairs at the office and even in church settings where volunteers work closely together occur because dopamine, a feel-good chemical in our brains, is released when we are engaging in fresh, challenging, fun activity. A man and woman, unmarried to each other, experience that dopamine release, associate that good feeling with the other person, and let down the walls that guard their hearts. That opens the way for conversation, sharing, and closeness that ends with an affair.
God gave us dopamine so that we can continue to feel close to our spouses throughout the years as we engage in fresh, challenging, fun activities. Use it there. Often.
On the other hand, understand what is really happening in your head and keep your guard up with everybody else!
