“Submit to each other out of reverence for Christ” (Eph. 5:21).
In this bible verse and following, submission is not about authority. It is about sacrifice, feeding and caring, and respect. As Paul teaches in Ephesians 5 and 6, submission is not just something wives do to husbands. It’s also what husbands do to wives, children do to parents, and fathers do to children. The submission looks different in all these familial relationships, but none of them are about “who’s the boss.” Additionally, the word “head” is not about being boss, but being a savior – one who gives himself sacrificially.
When we mutually submit, we choose to humbly give what will truly make being in relationship with us a real blessing for the other.
Husbands, you’ll already die for your wife if necessary, and that is a tremendous responsibility. Be sure to discover how day-to-day living for her looks.
Wives, honor your husband. Like his love for you, this respect is not about what he deserves, but the kind of wife you are. You know how to build your man up, give him this gift from your generous heart.
Always remember, submission is multi-directional giving.
